RECALLS OF CHEVROLET VEHICLES

The National Consumer Commission hereby provides an update on the recalls of the Chevrolet Cruze, Aveo, Saab, Cadillac and Orlando, as notified by Stellantis, the supplier.

Recall of Chevrolet, Saab and Cadillac vehicles

Stellantis South Africa (Pty) Ltd notified the NCC that they were recalling the Chevrolet, Saab and Cadillac due to a Takata airbag inflator defect. According to the supplier, the driver’s air bag inflator may experience an alteration over time, which could lead to overaggressive combustion in the event of an airbag deployment. As a result, in the event of an airbag rupture, metal fragments could pass through the airbag cushion material, which may result in injury or death to vehicle occupants. These vehicles were made available for sale from 2006 and 2008.

Recall of Chevrolet Cruze, Aveo and Orlando vehicles

The supplier informed the NCC that they are also recalling Chevrolet Cruze, Aveo and Orlando vehicles distributed from the year 2010 and 2013, as well as Chevrolet-Saab and Cadillac vehicles distributed between 2014 and 2018. These vehicles are recalled due to a driver’s airbag inflator that may rupture during airbag deployment phase The potentially high energic deployment of the inflator may lead to metal fragments detaching from the bursting inflator and these parts could fly in the direction of the driver or occupants in the vehicle, capable of causing serious injury or possibly death in a worst-case scenario.

Consumers with affected vehicles are advised to visit their nearest dealership for repair or replacement of the airbag.
