Product safety recall – 77 Toyota Rav4 Phev vehicles

The National Consumer Commission (NCC) notifies all affected consumers that Toyota SA Motors (PTY) Ltd is recalling its RAV4 PHEV vehicles. The recall affects seventy-seven (77) vehicles which were built from 2 April 2026 to 3 September 2026 and sold throughout the country.

According to the supplier, the subject vehicles have a plug-in-hybrid system, which includes a motor generator ECU (MG-ECU). In some cases, the MG-ECU in these vehicles may not complete the motor initialisation process correctly, resulting in the motor control mode used for speeds being unavailable. In this condition, when the vehicle reaches a speed that requires the higher-speed motor control mode, warning lights will illuminate, and the plug-in-hybrid system will either transition to a fail-safe driving mode or shut down. If the system shuts down, the vehicle can lose motive power while being driven at a higher speed, increasing the risk of an accident.

Consumers who own the affected vehicles are advised to take their vehicles to an authorised Toyota dealership for the MG-ECU to be reprogrammed at no cost to the consumer. The NCC urges consumers to take recall notices seriously and to contact the relevant suppliers to ensure that the necessary corrective action is taken.
